Lancaster, England Hotels

The historic city of Lancaster is an ideal location to stay in if you are en route to Scotland or spending time in the Lake District. The city has its own charms with castles and museums. The city also has a long maritime history so a visit to St. George's Quay would be fitting.

  1. Boutique Hotels

    • The Ashton Hotel in Lancaster, run by a former film and TV set designer, claims to be the only five-star hotel in the city. This boutique hotel, in a Georgian manor house, has just five bedrooms. They range from a grand room to a classic. Luxurious touches include underfloor heating in the shower room. The Ashton is close to Morecambe Bay and the Lake District fells and a drive away from stone villages in the Lune Valley.

    Budget

    • The Sun Hotel is rated as a four-star accommodation but room prices are from just $87 (£55), as of January 2011. The 17th-century hotel, in the city center, provides a modern take on a traditional coaching inn. The writer Charles Dickens and Bonnie Prince Charlie both drank in the bar with its vast selection of cask ales and wines. The 16 bedrooms have Italian en suite bathrooms. The Sun is just five miles from the train station and close to the city's pubs and restaurants.

    Chain Hotels

    • The Holiday Inn in Lancaster is just off the motorway so is ideal if you are planning a short, 30-minute drive to the Lake District with its World of Beatrix Potter theme park. Alternatively, if you are staying in the city, the hotel is just two miles away from Lancaster museum and close to the Butterfly House in the center. Swimming and beauty treatments are available in the hotel's Spirit health club.

    Historic

    • Penny Street Bridge Street is a central hotel in an historic, 100-year-old building. The hotel overlooks the Lancaster canal. Although the building has old-world charm, the hotel offers a full range of modern amenities. It has 28 rooms. Complimentary continental breakfast is included. The hotel's food was "highly commended" at the Lancashire Life Food and Drink Awards in 2010. Penny Street is a 10-minute car journey from Morecambe and the Lancashire coast.
