Found in northeast Ohio, in Geauga County, Lake Aquilla is made up of two separate wildlife areas and several smaller bodies of water, including a 26-acre lake. Open to the public, the Lake Aquilla Wildlife Area provides opportunities for pond fishing and waterfowl hunting. Only small electric motor boats may be used on the lake and visitors can take advantage of the boat ramp to access the water. Out-of-town visitors traveling to or through the Lake Aquilla area can find several options for lodging nearby.
Located only three miles from the Lake Aquilla Wildlife Area, in the small town of Clardon, the Bass Lake Inn features 12 guest rooms each with a fireplace, Jacuzzi and kitchenette. Visitors to the Bass Lake Inn have access to the on-site Bass Lake Taverne, a restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner with a varied menu of steaks, chops, seafood and wild game. Just north of Lake Aquilla Wildlife Area and east of Clardon, the Story Book Ranch and Bunk House invites guests to stay in one of two one-bedroom suites in the bunk house on the property of owner, Paula Horbay. Besides peace and quiet, guests can enjoy walks along the property and then settle in front of the fireplace featured in each room. Activities in the area occur all year-round and include horseback riding, golfing, snow skiing, boating and fishing. Families can visit Pioneer Water Park, which sits only two miles from the bunk house.
Less than 10 miles south of Lake Aquilla is the town of Burton, home of the Red Maple Inn. With 17 guest rooms, each with Amish furniture and Jacuzzis, the Red Maple Inn also offers a game room, fitness center and a complimentary wine and cheese party every day. Guests can easily access a number of hiking trails, some within walking distance of the hotel, like the ones through downtown Burton. Other nearby activities include boating and swimming at Headwater Park and Ladue Reservoir and shopping and dining in Burton and the surrounding area.
