Marin City is an unincorporated community in Marin County north of San Francisco. The area was first widely settled during World War II when it housed shipyard workers. Since the war Marin City has fallen into a socioeconomic rut that contrasts sharply with the rest of wealthy Marin County. Crime, drugs and poverty have been rampant problems in Marin City for decades. Unsurprisingly, visitors will find no hotels in Marin City. But just a mile-and-a-half southeast, the city of Sausalito provides several upscale accommodations.
