McGrath, Alaska is a small town located about 270 miles north of Fairbanks. It is an isolated town, served only by an airport and seaplane base, with no road connections. Due to the town's small size and isolated location there are no major hotels in McGrath, however, there are a few smaller places to stay while you're in town.
Taskusko House is a 15-room and 7,000-square-foot facility located on the river in central Mcgrath. It primarily offers lodging and a full range of meals, although it does also have high-speed Internet access and satellite television in two public rooms. The majority of people who stay there are service providers heading out to the various villages around McGrath, as well as tourists watching the Iditarod race.
The Hotel McGrath Bed and Breakfast is a small hotel located in McGrath. According to the hotel's website it offers modern lodging and home cooked meals. The hotel also offers a coffee bar and a 24-hour business center including a computer with complimentary Internet access. The hotel is also the waiting area for Peninsula Airways' only flight to McGrath. For 2011, regular rates start around $130 but rates during the Iditarod can reach $450.
Susie's Iditarod Trail Cafe is the cheapest of the lodging options in McGrath and also offers the most rustic feel. The cafe offers food on-site as well as lodging. As with the other hotels in McGrath there are limited number of rooms available so make sure you book early if you are looking to stay there.
Since lodging options in Mcgrath are very limited the only other options are to stay in Fairbanks or Anchorage. With the limited lodging space you should plan your trip well in advance and before you schedule any flights in and out to make sure there is space available at one of the hotels in town. If you plan on traveling during the Iditarod then call to check availability before you book your flight.
