South Dakota became a state on November 2, 1889, and was named for the Lakota and Dakota Indian tribes. This state is fairly large but has one of the lowest populations in America. This state is known for its breathtaking scenery and attractions such as the world-renowned Mount Rushmore. Cities such as Rapid City and Pierre see lots of tourism from those looking for a taste of the old west, while outdoor enthusiasts enjoy destinations such as Oacoma.
