Keflavik International Airport is the largest and busiest airport in Iceland. Keflavik International is located 30 miles west of the capital, Reykjavik, and handles most international flights to and from Iceland. Passengers can travel between the airport and Reykjavik by taxi or the public Flybus, but visitors arriving early or leaving late may prefer to stay at one of the several nearby hotels.
Hotel Keilir is in downtown Keflavik, five minutes from the airport. A number of shops and restaurants are just a short walk from the hotel, and the Blue Lagoon spa and resort is a 15-minute drive. The hotel's 40 guestrooms offer either ocean or street views and are decorated in a modern, minimalist style. Breakfast is included in rates, and guests can have a drink at the on-site FlexBar. "Frommer's" recommends the hotel's personalized service, and advises that rates are around 40 percent lower between September and May.
The Flughotel is five minutes from the airport, on the Reykjanes peninsula, home to Iceland's oldest lighthouse and a number of hiking trails. The hotel is a two-minute walk from the sea, and offers a complimentary shuttle service to and from the airport. Icelandair Flughotel has 62 modern guestrooms and was fully renovated in 2007. Facilities include a sauna and fitness room, along with an on-site art gallery featuring works by Iceland's most respected artists. The on-site gourmet restaurant, Vocal, serves dinner, while breakfast and lunch are available at the informal cafe.
Hotel Keflavik is a five-minute drive from the airport. The hotel has 68 guestrooms, along with a six-room budget-priced guesthouse across the street. Suites feature whirlpool baths, and "Frommer's" advises requesting a room with an ocean view. Facilities, which are free for guests of both the hotel and the guesthouse, include a gym, sauna and solarium, and a mini-golf course is a five-minute walk away. A buffet breakfast is included in rates, and there is a coffeehouse, bar and restaurant connected to the hotel.
Bed and Breakfast Keflavik is located on a former military base, five minutes from the airport. The family-run hotel has 53 guestrooms, and facilities include a gym and fully-equipped kitchen. The hotel offers a 24-hour complimentary pick-up service from the airport and organizes day trips to popular places in Iceland, including the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Geysir and Gullfoss. Breakfast is included in rates and guests receive a discount if staying for more than two nights.
