San Francisco Japanese Hotels

San Francisco, California, is a melting pot of international cultures, which is made evident by neighborhoods such as Little Italy, Chinatown and Japantown. The Japantown district of San Francisco features Asian-themed shopping centers and restaurants, all within walking distance of the neighborhood's Japanese-themed hotels. San Francisco also has Japanese-themed hotels in other districts of the city, including Union Square.

  1. Hotel Kabuki

    • Located in the heart of San Francisco's Japantown district, Hotel Kabuki is right off Post Street, across the street from Asian-themed shopping and dining opportunities at the Japan Center Shopping Center and Nihonmachi Mall. This hotel has a tranquil atmosphere in the lobby area. On-site dining is provided at the O Izakaya Lounge, which is open for breakfast every day of the week, and dinner on Wednesdays through Sundays.

This hotel boasts a pagoda-style tower and a garden wing, where guest rooms have views of a garden and waterfall. All of the rooms have Asian-style furniture, artwork and Japanese-style tubs. Pets may stay for an extra fee. Each guest receives a complimentary pass to Japantown's Kabuki Springs and Spa when reservations are made online. In-room massage is also available upon request.

    Best Western Hotel Tomo

    • This Japanese-themed Best Western hotel is in the center of the Japantown neighborhood, and is on the northern end of the Buchanan Street pedestrian mall. This pedestrian-only thoroughfare is lined with eastern Asia trees and Asian-style buildings that house shops and restaurants. Some of Buchanan Street's Japanese restaurants include Tanpopo and Doobu, both popular local eateries. The Raymond Kimbell Playground, which features walking and bicycling paths, is a five-minute walk from the hotel.

The hotel's décor consists of Japanese pop culture themes, which can be seen in the eclectic artwork resembling anime graphic novels, lighting fixtures and furniture pieces. Some of the 125 guest rooms have balconies that offer views of the surrounding Japantown buildings. The on-site restaurant, Mum's, serves Asian cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The restaurant also has a full-service bar, where you can indulge in sake or Sapporo beer. Reservations are recommended, due to the dining room's small size.

    Hotel Nikko

    • The Hotel Nikko is a boutique hotel on San Francisco's Union Square, approximately 10 minutes east of Japantown. This hotel features a blend of Japanese-style services and European hotel elegance. The Japanese services include shiatsu massage therapies, which are available by appointment; Subarashee Yuma pillow-top beds in the guest rooms; and culinary dishes at Anzu, the hotel's on-site restaurant. This upscale dining establishment offers sushi and Asian fusion cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Brunch is available on Sundays. Other hotel features include an indoor swimming pool, fitness center and the Rrazz Room, a lounge that provides nightly jazz and soul music entertainment.

Boutique shopping and fine dining opportunities are within walking distance of the hotel at Union Square and at the Westfield San Francisco mall on Market Street. Performing arts buffs can take a five-minute walk to the American Conservatory Theater and watch live theatrical shows. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, also known as MOMA by the locals, is a five-minute taxi ride from the hotel.
