Originally built as the New California Hotel right after the 1906 earthquake and fire destroyed much of San Francisco, the San Remo Hotel, just a few blocks south of Fisherman's Wharf, was renamed in 1922. The 62-room Italianate Victorian became popular in North Beach for its Old World charm, quiet rooms and heirloom furnishings, including brass beds and pedestal sinks evoking the turn-of-the-century style. Shared baths and showers are found down the hallways from bedrooms. A favorite with visitors is the Fior D'Ialita restaurant, founded in San Francisco in 1886, which moved to the ground level of the hotel in 2005.
