Located on the Appomattox River in southern Virginia, Petersburg is a city of historical significance. The nine-month siege of Petersburg during the Civil War was just one of several major encounters in the region, and numerous battlefield sites draw visitors to the city annually. Downtown Petersburg, known as Old Towne, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Old Towne features numerous restaurants and boutiques as well as a vibrant arts center. Petersburg is the closest city to the U.S. Army's Fort Lee military base.
