The Miramar Marine Base was first established in 1917 as a gathering point for soldiers going to WW1. It was used until 1920 as a demobilization and convalescent center. In 1932, Charles Lindbergh used the base to practice landings and take-offs with his new plane, which he then flew across the Atlantic. Today, the airbase is known for its yearly air show which features US Navy Blue Angels, Canadian Snowbirds and WW2-era planes. The base is about 15 miles from the center of San Diego and there are many hotels near the base that offer easy access to both.
The Ramada, about six miles from the base, is eight miles to the San Diego Zoo and old town and 10 miles to downtown. Work-up a sweat in the fitness center, then cool-off and relax in the pool, whirlpool and sauna. Chin's restaurant serves Chinese dishes.
