The Naval Station Great Lakes is a recruit training center in northern Chicago. It's the naval equivalent of the army's "boot camp" that shapes recruits into sailors physically and mentally. Families in town to visit a relative at the naval station can find hotels close by.

The Holiday Inn Express is four miles from the Great Lakes Naval Base and offers a discount package for guests attending a naval graduation ceremony. The hotel also offers a Six Flags Great America package and a discount for midweek reservations, as of 2010. Some rooms include private whirlpool tubs and wet bars. All guests can enjoy the fitness facility, business services, complimentary breakfast and indoor pool. There is no in-hotel restaurant, but several chain restaurants are nearby.

The Candlewood Suites of Waukegan is five minutes from the naval base. The hotel was renovated in 2010 with 122 guest rooms, 101 of which are non-smoking. As of October 2010, pets weighing less than 80 pounds are allowed for a fee of $15 for the first night and $10 for every additional night. Candlewood Suites has an on-site fitness facility, business center and a forest walking trail. The Candlewood Cupboard is a small store selling discounted snacks, beverages and frozen food. Discounts are available for government and military guests, and special packages are offered to the public throughout the year.
