Poydras Street is one of primary thoroughfares in the Central Business District of downtown New Orleans, just upriver of the famed French Quarter. It is home to the Louisiana Superdome, and home of the New Orleans Saints football team. The hotels of Poydras serve fans of the Saints and Tulane's Green Wave football games, and then, during Mardi Gras season, are close to the parade routes and French Quarter revelry.
The Whitney Hotel is in central Poydras Street, and is housed in a converted bank building that was constructed in the late 19th century. The hotel uses many of the bank's features, including the "Private Vault" room, which is now used for private parties at the on-site Li'l Dizzy's restaurant. The restaurant serves Creole cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
The hotel is within walking distance of locally owned restaurants. Lafayette Square, a European-style recreation area, features gardens and walking paths, and is across the street from The Whitney Hotel. Families can check out the marine wildlife exhibits at the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas on Canal Street, a 10-minute walk away.
