Boston grew up around Tremont Street. One of the city's most prominent thoroughfares, it takes its name from the three hills that defined the original 17th century settlement. Tremont Street starts in the heart of historic Boston and winds through some of the city's most colorful neighborhoods. The street is lined with landmark churches, parks theaters, restaurants and some of the city's most popular hotels.
The front door is actually on School Street, but the Parker House, Boston's oldest luxury hotel, has a side entrance on Tremont. Built in the mid-19th century, the hotel has a rich history as a meeting place of Boston's literary giants such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Oliver Wendell Holmes. The 551-room hotel, now owned by the Omni chain, has been completely renovated, although there is still plenty of the original hotel's signature dark oak and crystal fixtures. Accommodations range from single rooms with a twin bed to luxury suites. The Parker Restaurant, credited with creating the Boston crème pie and Parker House rolls, serves hearty New England fare including Boston's traditional seafood dishes.
