Boutique Hotels in Damascus, Syria

Damascus is the oldest city to be continuously occupied in the world, the capital of Syria and one of world's great historic destinations. Its first appearance in the history books is when it was conquered by the Ancient Egyptians in the 15th century B.C., and it has changed hands several times on the way to becoming the important Islamic city it is today. With the modernization of the city over recent decades, a series of boutique hotels has popped up inside the old Damascus buildings into which the customary mega-hotels could never fit.

The fivestar Beit Al Mamlouka Boutique Hotel is Syria's self-proclaimed "first boutique hotel." The complex is actually a series of grand 17th-century buildings that have been transformed into fine accommodations. With only eight total guestrooms, you can expect personal service and an intimate atmosphere with 18th-century artworks and 200-year-old frescoes blended into the stately decor. Set within Damascus' Christian quarter, the Beit al Mamlouka is within easy walking distance of the best attractions.

Its setting within a 300-year-old home limits the Talisman Hotel to a total of 12 rooms and suites. The hotel stands next to the city's 'Peace Gate.' Guests walk down a small alley and into an unmarked door behind which stands a luxurious palace.
