The Perhentian Islands are located 10 nautical miles northeast of Malaysia in the state of Terengannu. Two large islands make up the chain: Pulau Perhentian Kecil (Small Perhantian) and Perhantian Besar (Big Perhentian). The name originates from "henti," meaning "stop," as for centuries fisherman from the mainland used the islands for shelter and rest during storms.
Visitors travel to the Perhentians to experience crystal clear waters, unspoiled tropical jungles and exotic wildlife. Resort hotels supply guided diving and jungle excursions, modern facilities and traditional style and service.
The Perhentian Island Resort is on the eastern side of Peninsular Malaysia, between Kelantan and Terengganu, facing the South China Sea. Access is via boat from Kuala Besut, a small fishing village in northern Terengganu.
The resort is a private beachfront hotel offering a variety of chalets on 25 acres of lush tropical rainforest. Rooms include private balconies, international direct-dial phones, air conditioning, 24-hour electricity and hot water. Facilities include a patio pool, a beach-view restaurant serving Malaysian and Western fare from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., and an open air beachfront cafe that offers drinks and barbecue service. The resort offers activities such as diving, snorkeling, kayaking, canoeing, jungle treks and karaoke.
