Before 1988, Canal Park in Duluth, Minnesota, had one hotel and no Lakewalk. Then, in the early 1990s, a number of dining establishments and hotels were built in Canal Park to accommodate Duluth visitors and convention attendees. Canal Park is on Lake Superior, but the lake is much too cold for swimming. To compensate, five Canal Park hotels have heated swimming pools for their guests.
The Suites Hotel is on the southwest side of Canal Park in a building that was constructed in 1889. This Duluth hotel has 132 suites ranging from premium, one-bedroom king and two-bedroom whirlpool suites to one-, two- and three-bedroom king suites. The suites have whirlpools and microwaves, and all rooms and suites have mini-fridges and free Wi-Fi. The hotel serves a complimentary hot breakfast. The Comfort Suites is another smoke-free Canal Park hotel. All of the 123 rooms have free Internet, a mini-fridge and a microwave. Some of the suites have balconies overlooking Lake Superior, and others have fireplaces or whirlpool baths. A hot continental breakfast is served each morning.
