North Carolina Ski & Snowboarding Resorts

North Carolina, located in the southeastern United States, is home to the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains in the western part of the state. Both of these mountain ranges features ski resorts that accommodate winter activities, such as alpine and cross-country skiing, and snowboarding. Some resorts offer lodging accommodations, while others are near cities that have hotels. The ski season in North Carolina typically runs from December through March or April.

    • Wolf Ridge Resort in Mars Hill is nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, approximately 45 minutes north of Asheville. This ski resort features 20 trails and five lifts that allow snowboarding as well as skiing. Other activities facilitated at Wolf Ridge include snow tubing and night skiing. The hours of operation are 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sundays. The Wolf Ridge ski season runs from December to March. Lodging can be found at the on-site Scenic Wolf Resort, which offers cabin accommodations and guest rooms at the Lodge at Wolf Ridge.

    Sugar Mountain Resort

    • Sugar Mountain Resort is located in the Great Smoky mountain town of Banner Elk and provides over 110 acres of skiing and snowboarding trails. The resort includes 20 trails and eight lifts. Snowboarding and skiing lessons are available for adults and children. Snow tubing, night skiing and snow shoeing activities are also facilitated at Sugar Mountain. Hour of operations at Sugar Mountain are 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. every night of the week during the ski season, which runs from November to March. The summer months at Sugar Mountain allows guests to participate in hiking activities as well as tennis and golf at the resort's 18-hole course. Cabin accommodations are also available for guests who wish to lodge at Sugar Mountain Resort.

    Appalachian Ski Mountain

    • Appalachian Ski Mountain in the Blue Ridge Mountains hosts 22 trails and five ski lifts for tourists who are seeking to participate in skiing and snowboarding activities. Snowtubing and night skiing are also featured at this ski resort. During the ski season, which usually runs from December to April, the operating hours are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day. Tickets are sold separately for day and night skiing. Skiing and snowboarding lessons and rentals are available for children and adults. Appalachian Ski Mountain offers four chalets, known at the resort as "Slopeside Lodging," that include a living room area and fully furnished kitchen. The chalets are available year-round.
