Boone, nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is in western North Carolina and central to ski resorts offering alpine skiing and snowboarding. Sugar Mountain Resort in Banner Elk is less than 30 minutes from Boone and provides skiers with 20 trails and eight chair lifts, as well as rentals and ski lessons. Snowboarding lessons and rentals are also available. Other activities at Sugar Mountain include snow tubing and night skiing. Annual festivals, such as Oktoberfest and Sugarfest, are also held in the Village at Sugar Mountain, a collection of shops and lodging. During the ski season, which typically runs from November through March, the ski area is open 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Hiking and cycling trails are open for guests during the summer months. Appalachian Ski Mountain in Blowing Rock provides its guests with 11 trails and five lifts. The resort is a 10-minute drive from Boone. The season for Appalachian Ski Mountain lasts from December to April and the hours are 9:00 a.m. to 10 p.m. The resort's late hours allow for night skiing. Other activities available at Appalachian Ski Mountain include snowboarding and snow tubing. Rentals for skiing and snowboarding are located at the resort. Cabin and chalet accommodations are available by Slopeside Lodging, a collection of lodges located at the base of the mountain.

Beech Mountain Resort is less than an hour from Boone and offers 10 lifts and 15 trails for skiing and snowboarding. Snow tubing and night skiing is also available. The season usually lasts from December to April. During the season, the hours of operation are 9:00 a.m. to 10 p.m. A rental shop for skiing and snowboarding equipment is available on the property. Skiing lessons are available at the resort's Snow Sports Learning Center. Lodges and cabins are available for rent on the mountainside. Beech Mountain also has a rink for ice skating. During the summer, the area is opens for hiking, mountain climbing and cycling.
