Alpine Ski Resorts in the Poconos

The Pocono Mountains in northeastern Pennsylvania have popular ski resorts set against beautiful scenery. Novice, beginner, intermediate and expert skiers and snowboarders are all catered for and the resorts host several festivals and events. The four counties in the region contain 150 lakes and there are historic towns to explore. Fishing and hiking are popular in the summer months.

  1. Camelback Mountain Resort

    • Camelback Mountain Resort has the most ski runs in the region and all the trails are lit to enable night skiing. In addition to skiing and snowboarding, the resort offers snowtubing with single and double tubes, and tube chains for four or five people to ride. Two zip lines stretching over 1,000 feet take riders above the tree line at 85 feet above ground. Every level of skier is welcome and the terrain for novices has been expanded. Instructors at the Snow Sports School are certified with the PSIA and AASI.

    Jack Frost Big Boulder

    • Jack Frost and Big Boulder are two resorts in one, owned by the same company. Big Boulder, at Lake Harmony, was the first to open and the twin resorts offer winter and summer activities. Skiing, snowboarding and snowtubing with single tubes occupy winter sports enthusiasts and summer visitors go boating, fishing and hiking. The One Park at Jack Frost opened later and caters to beginners and intermediates, offering a longer trail than at Big Boulder Park. The magazine, "TransWorld Snowboarding" voted it in the top five poll for terrain parks in Canada's East Coast and the U.S. for the 2008/2009 season.

    Shawnee Mountain Ski Area

    • Shawnee Mountain ski resort has trails and terrain parks plus a park for snowtubing. The trails are lit for night skiing and more jumps have been added for the 2010/2011 season. There is a calendar of events throughout the season and the resort hosts NASTAR ski racing. There is a family restaurant and cafes for snacks and a babysitting service for children aged 18 months upwards. The Tune & Repair Center tunes skis and snowboards with its tuning machine.
