Grand Hotel, first opened way back in 1887, is a famous fixture in Mackinac. In 2008 and 2009, Travel & Leisure magazine named the Grand Hotel one of the Best Hotels in the World. The elegant whitewashed hotel is an elegant sight that can be seen from various points on the island. At 660 feet, Grand Hotel's porch is the largest in the world. As far as rooms go, no two guest rooms are alike, and each room has been personally designed by New York-based designer Carleton Varney. There are four "categories" of rooms, with "Category 4" being the most exclusive and luxurious. A stop at the Grand Hotel is a fixture on every horse and carriage tour on the island.
