The Latin word petrae, meaning rock, gives the meaning to the area known as Petra. Petra lies in a valley east of Wadi'Araba in Jordan about 80 kilometers south of the Dead Sea. Petra was the principal city of the ancient Nabataea and was famous for its trade and its hydraulic engineering system. The spice trade flourished here, even after it fell under Roman rule.
The town is known for it's amazing buildings that were carved out of the sandstone and were the population center for its estimated 20,000 residents.
