Tent trailers transform from utility trailer to spacious tents and are easiest to tow. Travel trailers can be towed by vans or trucks and have rigid, full height walls. Fifth wheels are attached with a higher hitch in the bed of a pickup and are frequently used for extended stays.
The weight cars or trucks will tow varies. If the trailer you want exceeds your vehicle's towing capacity, you will need to get a larger, more powerful tow vehicle, or choose a super lightweight trailer instead.
Toy haulers have space that you switch from a portable "garage" for a scooter, motor cycle or quad to a living area. They can be regular tow or fifth wheel. Hybrid trailers have pop-out bunk tents that allow the same tent type expansion as a regular pop-up.
These are the most economical trailers to tow, and can expand to 20-plus feet when unfolded. The canvas and fabric screen windows make the unit a hard-topped tent.
Regardless of whether a trailer is to be used for short annual vacations or extended trips, it needs to be stored when you are not using it. Owners also need to be able to maneuver the trailer's length in traffic, going over mountain passes and backing up.
