What is Yellowstones Climate?

Continental, subalpine climate: (Köppen Dfc)

This climate is characterized by warm summers, cold winters, and significant snowfall. Temperatures in the summer time will frequently reach the 70s and 80s, and occasionally 90s, but only seldom will exceed 100 degrees. Due to the elevation of the park, nights will always see temperatures drop to below freezing - even during the warmest months.

Temperatures in the winter typically average below freezing, and frequently see temperatures in the single digits and lower. Wind chill and snow make daytime temperatures feel much colder.

Elevation Factors:

- Temperature is highly influenced by elevation. It decreases with increased altitude.

- At 7,500 feet, temperatures are often 20 degrees F cooler than the surrounding region - even in the summertime.

- The Old Faithful Geyser is located at 7,400 ft.

- The highest point in the park is Eagle Peak, which is located at 12,360 ft and covered in glaciers.
