Yellowstone East Gate: Open in September, Closes Late Sept

The East Entrance to Yellowstone National Park (via US-14/16/20 from Cody, WY) is open through September.

  • 2023 Schedule: Closed 4:00 PM MDT, September 26 for the season.
  • Typical pattern: Closes late September (usually last Friday or Saturday of the month).
  • Reopening: Mid-to-late May (depends on snow clearance over Sylvan Pass, 8,530 ft).

September is an excellent month to visit—fewer crowds, active wildlife (elk rut), fall colors, and all roads/services open until the seasonal closure. Check nps.gov/yell for current-year dates.
