How to Rent Vacation Homes by Owner

On your next vacation, you can skip the cramped hotel room and stay in a vacation home instead. Owners of vacation homes rent out the property, when they are not using it, through a variety of vacation rental services. You can find vacation home rentals that run the spectrum from luxury to basic. If you prefer to spend your time on vacation living more like a local than a tourist, then renting a vacation home by owner is a good option for you.

Instructions

    • 1

Look through the online listings of vacation home rentals to see what is available in the destination where you plan to take a vacation. CNN Money lists VRBO.com, HomeAway.com, VacationRentals.com and VacationFRBO.com as good places to look for vacation homes to rent (see the Resources section).

Click on the listings that interest you to see the details. Typically, you will be able to view photos, a complete description of the home, rental rates, reviews from previous customers and an availability calendar.

    • 3

Contact the vacation home's owner directly from the listing page. Look for the "Contact Owner" link. Some listings also have a phone number. CNN Money advises talking to the owner, if possible. Discuss the important aspects of the rental, such as confirming rates, additional fees, availability, location, listed amenities and how you are to receive the keys upon arrival.

Make your booking once you find a place that fits your needs. Usually, you are required to pay a deposit when you make the booking, with the balance due upon arrival. Some deposits may include a refundable cleaning fee. Keep in mind that you may need to pay in the local currency or the currency of the owner, which could result in extra fees on your credit card. If you are not sure, check with your credit card issuer.
