Airports are big, and there is a lot of standing and walking involved with traveling in and outside of one. Wear comfortable shoes that will allow you to get around quickly and efficiently. Limit the amount of jewelry you will have to remove in safety checkpoints. Opt for rolling luggage rather than bags that have to be carried.
Carry-on baggage should comply with TSA regulations. Liquid items should be less than 3 oz., prescriptions medications must have proper labels. Weapons are not permitted in the carry-on luggage. When packing checked luggage, never place important medications, cash or travel documents inside in case the luggage is lost or stolen. Use a carry-on bag to pack at least one day's worth of clothing, medications and toiletry essentials as well as valuables and money.
The location of where you are traveling to should ultimately determine what you pack. For example, a trip to a wintery area does not require sandals or a bathing suit. Bring items such as a calculator if you are traveling where currency needs to be converted. Bring along travel brochures, maps or information regarding the area you are going. Leave some general toiletries for purchase at your destination or bring along travel-size items instead. Pack a digital camera or purchase a disposable camera to limit the risk of losing your own.
Going to another place means that you will be leaving the comfort of your home. Overpacking is not only an inconvenience, but it also can put you at risk for travel crime. Leave items such as expensive jewelry, watches or items that are of significant value at home. Pack items including makeup, clothing and accessories that you are OK losing in the event your luggage is lost or stolen.
