How to Travel the World in the Shortest Distance

Assuming you didn't have to worry about the type of transportation or about crossing difficult terrain and large bodies of water, the shortest way to travel around the earth is around the north and south poles. This is the meridional path as opposed to the equatorial path. Because the Earth bulges at its equator due to its rotation and the fact that Earth is oblate spheroid, a sphere that is flattened at the poles, the meridional trip is approximately 20 miles shorter.

Instructions

    • 1

Leave on your journey from either the south pole on Antarctica or the north pole within the Arctic circle.

    • 2

Travel due north if you start from Antarctica or due south if you're starting your journey from the north pole.

    • 3

Continue around the second half of the earth, headed in a straight line toward the opposing pole. Using this route, you travel the world in the shortest distance, which is 24,860 miles.
