How do I Book a Round the World Trip?

A trip around the world is an experience that few people get to enjoy. Trips can be expensive, and planning can be daunting. However, travel offers the adventurous a chance to experience a myriad of cultures, sights and cuisines. Typical trips can last anywhere from a few months to several years depending on the countries you want to visit. Travellers can choose to book the trip themselves, or visit a travel agent for help.

Make a list of countries you want to visit. There are several trip planners online, such as the one offered by Bootsnall, (see Resources) that can help you choose countries you want to visit. They also provide information about flights and accommodations.

Get any needed vaccinations. Some visa applications may also require a note from your physician, so check health requirements and comply. Remember that you will probably not have the chance to check your health for a long time, so make sure you're in good physical condition.

    • 3

Apply for any needed visas. Visit the embassy website for each country you plan to visit. Most websites will provide application information and the location of the nearest embassy or consulate. You will probably need to visit the office in person twice. The first time you must submit your passport, so that authorities can affix the visa; you must also hand in any necessary forms and fees. A few weeks later you can return to collect your passport.

Book your trip once you have all the necessary visas. You can consult a travel agent in person or over the phone to have them book your trip for you. To find a certified agent near you, use the search engine on the ASTA website. (see Resources) If you choose to book the trip yourself, use a travel site such as Expedia to select hotels and flights. The website One World is also a useful resource that allows you to book intercontinental airline tickets. Click on the "Round-the-World Fares" tab to access the One World Explorer page. Users can book several tickets on any of their 11 member airlines and pay only one fare.

Book any transportation, hotels, or activities that are not included in your travel booking.

Contact your travel agent to confirm bookings before departing on your trip. If you booked your trip by yourself, double-check all of your travel preparations.
