Find travel companies. Many travel companies that offer trips to the Amazon can be found online. Travel magazines and guidebooks often offer reviews and in depth information on travel companies.
Research the company's reputation. The company may be listed with the Better Business Bureau. Look for companies that have been in business for a while and have a satisfactory response to all complaints.
Compare different services available from a variety of companies. Information from the company should be easy to obtain. They should be eager to answer any questions about tour arrangement, prices, the knowledge of their guides and operating standards.
Choose a company. Pick a travel company and begin to make plans. Find out any forms you need to sign, what is included in the price of the trip, and flight information.
Select a package deal for your trip. Adventure trips range from leisurely to intensive tours that require great physical condition. Rainforest lodges with indoor facilities are also available for tourists.
Check your passport. All Americans going overseas are required to carry a passport. Complete an application for a passport, if you don't have one or it has expired. Apply at least 8 weeks in advance of the trip's departure date.
Confirm information with the travel company. Include details about where you're staying, receiving your itinerary, pickups from the airport and other information about your trip.
Prepare a first aid kit. Put in different size adhesive bandages, gauze, tape, antibiotic ointment, aspirin for the basics. Include any other items that may be needed for your safety in the rainforest.
Schedule a doctor's visit 6 weeks before your trip. Confirm past vaccines are up to date. Let your doctor know what areas of the Amazon you're visiting to determine recommended vaccines. Speak to your doctor about the possibility of contacting Malaria and travelers diarrhea and get prescriptions for both.
Bring appropriate clothing. Your travel company should provide a detailed list describing what items are needed for your trip. Lightweight quick drying clothing should be included with long sleeves for the most protection.
Check overseas medical insurance coverage. Speak to your current medical insurance carrier. Most policies don't cover overseas travel but supplemental insurance can be purchased before your trip. Look for a policy that provides medical evacuation and emergency expenses.
Make copies of trip information. Make 2 copies of itinerary, passport and visa information. One copy should be left with family or friends and the other copy should be stored in your belongings separately from the actual documents. Place in a water-proof bag or container.
