It is important to get organized well before your move to prevent any unnecessary stress during the process. Start by making a check list of tasks to be completed before moving day. This list should include things to purchase or rent and people to contact. It is often helpful to organize this list in chronological order to ensure you complete tasks as they need to be finished. Don't be afraid to ask for help; speak to a friend or relative with moving experience and ask for help or ideas.
Once you've determined when your move will be taking place, immediately begin packing items you will not need until after your move. You will need boxes (available at most grocery or shipping stores), packing tape, padding for fragile objects and a permanent marker. Organize the boxes by room and contents, and be sure to label them clearly. Do not tape the boxes shut until closer to moving day in case you need something from them. If you are selling or donating appliances or furniture, begin posting advertisements on the Internet and arranging for them to be picked up.
Approximately 10 days before your move, you will need to call your utility companies and either cancel your service or set up a transfer to your new home. These companies typically include cable, Internet, phone, water, electric and gas. If you live in an apartment building, check the utility policy with the front office; some apartments will charge you a shut-off fee if you cancel your service without office assistance. Digital cable and Internet boxes will need to be returned to the cable provider. Mail can be forwarded in three ways: in person at the post office, by mail on a change-of-address form or on the Internet on the U.S. Postal Service Website. This step can be completed well in advance, but be aware that your mail may start arriving at your new home before you're there to pick it up.
Use your checklist to decide what equipment you will need on moving day. Wardrobe boxes, furniture pads, dish boxes, furniture covers and packing pads are available for purchase or rental at most moving stores. Decide what kind of vehicle or trailer will accommodate your possessions, and call a self-moving company to make reservations for the necessary vehicle. If you're moving to or from a college campus, you will want to complete this step at least one month before your move; the huge influx and outflow of university students on campus means trailers and vans will be very hard to come by.
