Last-Minute Winter Vacations

If you're considering a last-minute winter vacation, you have many options from which to choose. Travel to warm beaches in the Bahamas or go skiing and snow boarding in the mountains. Your preference may depend on where you live. Choose a destination based on your budget, location and whether you plan to travel with children.
  1. New York, NY

    • New York City offers a variety of things to do in the winter such as taking in one of the many art galleries throughout the city or ice skating at Rockefeller Center. Bus tours take place throughout the year and many of the tours are themed, such as the Sex and the City Tour and A Slice of Brooklyn Pizza tour. Stay warm indoors at the New York Aquarium in Brooklyn while learning about the world's aquatic ecosystems and viewing over 8,000 watery creatures on exhibit.

    Florida

    • Avoid the winter chill by taking a trip to Florida. A trip to Disney World is a great last minute vacation idea since tickets can be purchased at the park. Stay at a nearby hotel in Orlando or at one of the many resorts with which Disney partners. Visit some of the museums Florida has to offer, such as the Florida Holocaust Museum located in St. Petersburg and the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing located in Ocala, about an hour and a half from Orlando.

    Pocono Mountains, PA

    • About a two-hour drive from New York City, the Pocono Mountains offer winter fun for the entire family. Enjoy an extended skiing weekend. The slopes offer options for beginners and experienced skiers alike. The abundance of streams and lakes in the Poconos allows for a large selection of ice fishing areas. Lake Wallenpaupack, the third largest man-made lake in Pennsylvania, is a favorite spot for the avid fisher. After a long day of skiing and fishing, warm up in one of the Pocono's many historic bed and breakfast inns or rent a local cabin.

    Napa Valley, CA

    • Stay at one of the many bed and breakfast inns or other lodging choices in the Napa Valley for a relaxing, last-minute winter vacation. There are five towns located within the Valley: Calistoga, St. Helena, Yountville, Napa and American Canyon. The weather stays around 40 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit in winter and the best lodging deals are available during this time, with prices up to 40 percent cheaper than peak season rates. Napa Valley offers a large selection of wineries, many of which are family owned and many new wine release parties occur almost every weekend throughout the year. The Napa Valley Mustard Festival occurs in February each year when wild mustard layers the local vineyards with shades of green and yellow. The festival supports local businesses and encourage visitors to explore the Valley.
