If you are visiting or living in India, it is a good idea to have some knowledge of how the telephone system works, especially if you want to call home to the United States. In India, the government runs the telephone service, specifically the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. A vast telephone revamp began in 1986 and the modernization process continues today. Calling from India to the United States is a simple process because of these improvements.

     Dial "00," the International Access Code.

     Dial the country code "01" which is the code for both the United States and Canada.

     Dial the area code for the part of the United States you are calling. This is a three-digit number. To look up an area code, go to http://www.whitepages.com/area-codes.

     Dial the seven-digit phone number. It does not make a difference whether you are calling a landline or a cell phone number; the process is the same.
