Hawaii law states that an enclosed building is any building with a roof or overhang. The law covers hotel and condo rooms, but extends to patios and covered walkways as well.
Hotels and condos are allowed to designate 20 percent of their rooms as smoking. If you are a smoker, you may be able to find a smoking room if you shop around. If you are a non-smoker, you can look for a hotel or condo that is 100 percent smoke free.
Large fines may be imposed for smoking where you are not supposed to in Hawaii.
The individual fine is $50 plus court costs. A business that commits the offense will be fined $100 to $500. Some hotels may impose the fine onto non-compliant guests for putting them at risk.
