Group Travel to Hawaii

Traveling with a group can be an economical and educational introduction to a new place. Hawaii is an ideal spot to travel in a group---with its many different islands and geographical features, the Aloha State has a lot of ground to cover. Not only is it less expensive to travel in large numbers, but hearing other peoples' perspectives and learning about their discoveries will deepen your experience.

  1. Geography

    • Surfing is a popular sport in Hawaii

Hawaii is composed of hundreds of islands spread over 1,500 miles, but the eight biggest islands are (from the northwest to southeast) Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Maui and Hawaii (known as "The Big Island"). Each island is very different from the next. Many visitors find that they can find all of the volcanoes, beaches and luaus of their dreams on Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. Try to limit your visit to one or two islands--you will have a great time by slowing down, kicking back and enjoying the Aloha spirit.

    Considerations

    • Hawaii's big city life coexists with scenic volcanoes

The most important consideration is what you want to do and see when you travel to Hawaii. Figure out what you want to see and do in Hawaii. There is a huge array of options, like biking down a volcano on Maui, hiking through the Jurassic Park-like jungles of Kauai or relaxing on the beaches of the North Shore. Discuss it with your travel partners, and come to a compromise that everyone can agree on.

    Expert Insight

    • Ask a pro about Hawaiian group tours with helicopters

Once you and your family or friends have decided what you want to do and where you want to go, check out the different tour groups available. Start by doing an Internet search, but you might find that a travel agent can help you find the best tour group for your needs. Keep in mind that there are specialty tours, like bike tours, food tours and eco tours that can help you really experience Hawaii in depth in the way that is most appealing to you. Ask a travel professional for help.

    Budget Tips

    • Search for discounts at big box stores like Costco--they're in Hawaii, too!

Budget considerations are on everyone's mind during a vacation, and Hawaii is not a cheap destination. It can be done on a budget, but many items are more expensive on the islands than the mainland. Remember that Hawaii has many of the same discount stores that the mainland does---be sure to check out Costco on your trip. There you'll find many typical Hawaiian items at a discount, like leis, pineapples, chocolate-covered macadamia nuts, aloha shirts, and other indigenous items.

    Warning

    • Pineapples are ideal souvenirs from Hawaii

When booking your trip, be sure to be fully aware of all costs of the group tour, including all taxes. In 2009, Hawaii levied a Transient Accommodations Tax of 9.25 percent on all tourist accommodations---not just hotels, but also rental condos and houses. Be aware that that is on top of the 4 percent general excise tax. Remember that you are traveling in a group, though, so it will be less expensive overall than if you were doing it by yourself.

And whatever you do, do not take home volcanic rock as a souvenir. Not only is it illegal, but legend has it that the Hawaiian god Pele will curse you.
