In Hawaii, off season occurs twice throughout the year. The first off-season period runs from mid-April to mid-June, and the second starts in September and ends in mid-December.
Off season is an ideal time to visit Hawaii because the number of visitors decreases considerably. This means fewer crowds and less competition for space on the beach and various other activities, since most visitors congregate to the islands in the summer months. Weather is also much more reliable, and the average temperature is just right during off season. Perhaps the greatest benefit of traveling to Hawaii during off season is the lower cost of hotel, airline and packaged rates. Promotions and special deals are plentiful to entice more tourists, and the discounted prices make it well worthwhile for many travelers.
There is so much to do and see in Hawaii that there will most likely not be enough time to do it all. The islands of Hawaii possess beautifully lush rain forests, waterfalls, volcanoes and mountains, so exploration is a must for adventurers. Of course, the seemingly endless beaches provide the ultimate relaxation or recreation. In addition to the classic Hawaiian activities, there are many events and festivals that occur during off season. Highlights include:
Merrie Monarch Hula Festival in Hilo on the Big Island, which is Hawaii's biggest hula festival. It includes three nights of dance competition and other festivities. The festival occurs annually one week after Easter. Call 808-935-9168 for more information, and reserve tickets early.
Lei Day Celebrations, taking place on all islands. Activities include lei-making, pageants, and arts and crafts. Event occurs annually on May 1st. Call 808-886-1655 for more information.
Great Waikoloa Food, Wine and Music Festival at the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Big Island is considered one of the best food and wine festivals and should not be missed. It features top chefs, wines from around the world, a jazz concert and fireworks. This event takes place annually in mid-June. Call 808-886-1234 for more information.
Festival of Lights, takes place on all islands. Festivities include lighting of Christmas trees, parades and other fun activities for the family. Event occurs annually in early December. Call 808-667-9175 for more information.
The year-long average temperatures in Hawaii vary only slightly from month to month. During the two periods that are considered off season, the average temperatures are in the mid to high 70s, just reaching into the 80s. It rains somewhere on at least one of the islands at any given time during the day, but the showers usually do not last very long.
Before making any arrangements or purchasing a travel package, research all available options. Many hotels and airlines offer special discounted packages and rates, especially during off season, so search discount travel sites as well as the websites of airlines and hotels in Hawaii to save as much money as possible. Members of AAA may also find discounted travel packages through the company. If further assistance is desired, consult a local travel agent. A travel agent has access to many resources and insider information. It should be noted that vacations between the last week of April and into early May should be booked well in advance. This is Golden Week in Japan, where three Japanese holidays occur one after another. Hawaii is a popular destination for Japanese tourists during this time, so the islands will be slightly more crowded than usual, even though the time is still considered off season.
