Drink bottled water when visiting areas where the water may be polluted. Remember that ice is made from the same water, so avoid it if necessary. Use bottled water to brush your teeth.
Learn the local laws and customs that apply in any foreign country you visit. You're under the jurisdiction of their laws and could be arrested for actions that are legal in the U.S. Learn more about the laws of the country you plan to visit by contacting your travel agent or the embassy. You can also conduct your own research at the local library or online.
Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Don't share your itinerary with strangers. Try to avoid unlighted areas at night where you might be vulnerable and do not draw attention to yourself with expensive items or by displaying large amounts of money. Don't accept food or drinks from strangers and don't accept packages from people you don't know.
Ask your travel agent or contact the airline about what you can bring on the plane and the maximum luggage allowance. You will be charged more or have to leave behind items if your luggage is overweight.
When traveling with children, remember that they can get fidgety or cantankerous on long trips. Buy puzzles, hand-held games, story books and toys to occupy them. Carry baby wipes for sticky fingers and faces.
