A 2009 article in the St. Petersburg Times lists 25 favorite Tampa Bay, Fla., restaurants that have been in business for at least 25 years. These tried-and-true eateries have become Tampa Bay landmarks, and are dependable for their quality food and excellent service, as well as having unique dining atmospheres.

  1. Columbia Restaurant

    • Columbia Restaurant is Tampa's oldest restaurants. Its doors opened in 1905 and is now owned by the original family's fifth generation. In 2010, the restaurant was named an "All American Icon" by Nation's Restaurant News. The restaurant features traditional Spanish cuisine in an elegant and authentic setting, flamenco dancers and all. The 1905 salad is a classic, as well as the various kinds of paella.

    Colonnade Restaurant

    • The Colonnade opened its doors in 1935, originally serving American foods such as hamburgers and fried chicken. After World War II, the restaurant began serving seafood, it most famous feature. The restaurant overlooks Tampa Bay and offers a great view of the city skyline.

    Bern's Steak House

    • Bern's Steak House, established in 1956, is a prime location for fine dining in Tampa Bay. The current chef is a graduate of the Swedish Culinary Institute, and Bern's is truly an upscale restaurant, with a wide array of caviar, wines, fresh seafood, and fine liquor. Although dressy clothing is not required, it is certainly recommended, and those wearing jeans, t-shirts or flip flops will be seated in the lounge rather than the dining room areas.

    Skipper's Smokehouse

    • For a laid back evening with great music and food, Skipper's Smokehouse ideal. The menu is unique and quite Floridian, with choices such as black bean gator chili, fried gator tail, alligator ribs, and a variety of fresh fish. Skipper's is also home to a successful music venue, and live performances take place every night in the restaurant's backyard stage, known as the "Skipperdome."
