The Best Fishing in Hawaii

The coastal waters and freshwater lakes of the Hawaiian Islands offer endless fishing opportunities for avid anglers. Saltwater fish species include blue marlin, spearfish and barracuda. Freshwater species include catfish, trout and large-mouth bass.

  1. Kona Coast

    • The Big Island's Kona Coast holds the state record for the largest catch when it comes to swordfish; and albacore, big-eyed and striped bonito tuna. Kona is also popular for Mahi Mahi and Ono.

    The North Shore

    • O'ahu's North Shore is one of the best big game fishing locations, according to Kuuloa Kai Charters. Yellow-fin tuna are reported to be in abundance here.

    Nu'uanu Freshwater Fish Refuge

    • The Nu'uanu Reservoir Number 4, located in the Nu'uanu Freshwater Fish Refuge on O'ahu, is well-stocked with channel catfish. A permit is required to fish here, according to Hawaii Division of Aquatic Resources.

    Hapu'upu'u

    • If you want to go bottom-fishing, check out Hapu'upu'u, located on the South Kona Coast on the Big Island of Hawaii. This is where a 50-pound sea bass, the state record, was caught in April 2009.

    Lake Wilson

    • Lake Wilson on the island of O'ahu is a good place to catch channel catfish, red devils, pongee, oscar and bluegill.
