How to Find House Numbers by Street Names in California

Unlike many communities that define neighborhoods by street, California organizes house numbers (addresses) by the block. As you drive along a street, the blocks are the areas between the cross streets. Californians measure distances in terms of blocks. House numbers go in order, with odd numbers on one side of the street and even numbers on the other. Each block has a hundred possible addresses, but doesn't usually use them all. Some street name signs have numbers that indicate the range of addresses on that block.

Instructions

    • 1

Compare the address you seek against the house block number on the street name sign. If your address is higher, then go the direction of the arrow. Go the other way if it is lower. If there is no arrow, then try one way until the house numbers get larger or smaller.

    • 2

Subtract your house number from the house block number on the street name sign. Divide the result by 100.

    • 3

Travel that number of blocks, and you will find your house number.
