Free Activities in San Francisco & Daly City

San Francisco and Daly City are approximately eight miles apart -- both cities offer free activities to keep a local or tourist busy. The terrain is great for hiking or biking and if you're a photographer, the scenery is worthy of countless photographs. In addition to these free options, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Asian Art Museum offer free admission on the first Tuesday of every month.
  1. Golden Gate Park

    • Golden Gate Park is home to the de Young Museum, Conservatory of Flowers and the Legion of Honor -- all are free on the first Tuesday of every month. The San Francisco Botanical Garden is free on the second Tuesday of every month. The Japanese Tea Garden is free on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays if you go before 10 a.m. If you want to head to Sausalito, the 1.7 mile Golden Gate Bridge is always free to walk or bike across.

    Fisherman's Wharf

    • Go to Fisherman's Wharf to see historical sea vessels, such as the Balclutha, and take a free walk up and down the Hyde Street Pier. Pier 39 is the best spot to watch and listen to the sea lions as they bask on the docks -- always free and always entertaining. Free shows happen consistently all over Fisherman's Wharf -- watch the street performers dance, sing, paint and entertain the visitors daily.

    Thornton State Beach

    • Located in Daly City, Thornton State Beach is home to some of the best ocean views around the San Francisco Bay area -- one such vista is located at the end of John Daly Boulevard. Take a walk or bike ride up the trails and explore the nature around you. The area features many great spots to climb, hike, take photographs or just relax and enjoy the views. The Bay Area Ridge Trail begins where the old Thornton Beach Road meets the sand dunes.

    Cable Car Museum

    • The Cable Car Museum was established in 1974 and is operated as a non-profit educational facility. The museum has three antique cable cars from the 1870's and viewing areas for visitors to watch the gears and cables at work. Dozens of antique photographs are on display and a gift shop is open to browse. Admission is always free, though the museum is closed on New Year's Day, Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
