The Best New York City Souvenirs

Forget the mini Statues of Liberty or the $4 "I (heart) New York" T-shirts: Most of them are made in China anyway. New York City is one of the most vibrant cities in the world and offers so much more in the way of interesting souvenirs that will really help you remember your visit to the city. To find souvenirs, think out of the typical tourist box to find some distinctive souvenirs.
  1. Cufflinks

    • The New York Transit Authority manages the operations of the New York City buses and subway systems, the Long Island Railroad, Metro North trains, the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge (f.k.a. the Triborough Bridge) and the bridges and tunnels running into the city. Visit the Authority's museum shop and purchase cufflinks that look exactly like the tokens used to ride the buses and subways. The tokens were discontinued in 2003, and the system now only accepts plastic yellow metro cards with a magnetic strip.

    'United Nations Souvenirs

    • The United Nations (U.N.) is on most tourists' list of places to go when visiting New York City. Located in midtown on the east side of the city, the U.N. building overlooks the East River. Stop by the United Nations' Bookshop or Gift Centre and pick up an international souvenir. Between the two stores you can choose music, pins, posters, books and a lot more to commemorate your visit.

    Street Artist Art

    • On almost every street in New York City and especially in parks and near tourist locations, you can find vendors hawking their goods. From clothing to jewelry to photography or paintings, you will find much to choose from. Buy an authentic piece of New York and help the city's artists by purchasing a piece of art. Be prepared though as some of the pieces can be pricey.

    Bagels

    • Is New York City the birthplace of the bagel? Probably not, but it is definitely known for them. According to the 2010 City Search "Best of" poll, H&H and Ess-a-bagel make the best bagels in the city. Visit these bagel mavens and try a hot-out-of-the-oven flavored or plain bagel with your choice of one of the 25 cream cheeses or toppings. Buy a baker's dozen and bring some bagels home so you can relive the flavor from your own home.
