Before you actually do walk, hop a bus or streetcar, or drive around to explore outside of the French Quarter. It is highly advisable for you to have a tour guide and or map in your possession. Consult your map for more sites to see. Sometimes guided tours will offer you a little bit of everything. Check into some New Orleans tourist companies that offer walking tours and organized tours.
Practice common sense and stay alert to your surroundings. Do not carry around a lot of cash. Also don't do any special sightseeing after dark anywhere in New Orleans or outside of it, unless you plan to hire a taxi cab or get a rental car to get around.
