With long stretches of Atlantic coastline as well as more sheltered waterways, a trip to New York’s Long Island wouldn’t be complete without at least one boat trip. An abundance of marine wildlife makes the area a great place for whale-watching or seal-spotting cruises and, for those who enjoy something a little more sedate, there are on-the-water wine-tasting sessions or relaxed riverboat dinner cruises.
Viewing one of the world’s largest mammals at close quarters in its natural environment can be a thrilling and emotional experience. The ocean off Long Island is a haven for marine mammals with sightings of humpback, minke and fin whales possible during the summer. Viking Fleet operates six-hour whale-watching cruises out of Montauk, at the far eastern tip of Long Island, from late June through early September.
During the winter the local marine wildlife changes from whales to seals which can be seen popping their heads above the water at a variety of spots along the Long Island coast. The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation operates seal-spotting cruises out of Freeport on weekends and some weekdays from the end of December to mid-April. A trained naturalist is on board and all proceeds support the New York State Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Rescue Program.
One of the best spots for a calm cruise among a variety of flora and fauna is the 88-acre wetlands preserve off the coast of Stony Brook on the sheltered north side of Long Island. The Ward Melville Heritage Organization runs daily 90-minute boat tours from May to October. Each cruise is narrated by an expert from Stony Brook University’s marine science department who provides information about the area’s wildlife, flora, ecosystem and history.
For those who enjoy good food and drink, a relaxing evening of wine-tasting while touring the waters off Long Island could be just the ticket. On Thursday evenings during the summer, The Long Island Aquarium operates a cruise along the Peconic River where guests can taste a variety of local wines while enjoying the scenery. With appetites whetted by the sea air and the wine, the cruise is followed by a shoreside lobster bake.
Step back in time on the Lauren Kristy, a 65-foot turn-of-the century riverboat which operates out of Long Island’s Bay Shore Marina. Enjoy a lunch or dinner cruise while marveling at both the scenery and the restored interiors of the boat. There is a cash bar on all tours and entertainment is provided on evening cruises. The boat is also available for private charters.
