Vineyard Tours in Tuscany, Italy

San Giovese grapes dominate the Tuscan landscape, making the area a foremost region for red wine production. The Chianti Classico region sits at the heart of Tuscany. Differences in the climate, soil and production allow for variations, and touring local vineyards allows insight into the development and flavors of the regions. While most vineyards welcome tastings on a walk-in basis, tours should be arranged at least a day in advance.
  1. Castello di Brolio

    • Many claim Castello di Brolio conceived the orignal formula for Chianti.

Brolio remains on of Italy's best-known Chiantis. The monks of Badia Fiorentina settled the grounds around 1000 A.D. before the current Ricasoli family took over in 1141 A.D. The stately castle anchors the grounds for visitors. Tour options include a cellar and castle tour, a visit to the cellars and the experimental vineyard and tours of the museum holding Ricasoli family artifacts. As the family resides at the manor, it is unavailable for public view. Visit the property through organized tours daily from June through September and every day except Fridays from October through May.

    Badia a Coltibuono

    • Lemons, lavender and roses share space with San Giovese grapes at Badia a Coltibuono.

Badia a Coltibuono translates as, "abbey of the good harvest," in Italian. Producing wine since the 11th Century, the Lorenza de Medici family has run this vineyard located two and a half miles north of Giaole for more than 150 years. In addition to Chianti Classico, the vineyard also produces cold-pressed olive oils, vinegars and honey which are available for purchase. Though it also serves as a family home, parts of the manor remain open for tours. Visitors may also visit the church and lakes on the property. Tours range from 50 minutes to two hours. Owners offer cooking classes at select times throughout the year and accommodations are available. Tour the property during afternoons from May through July and September through October.

    Villa Vignamaggio

    • Picturesque Villa Vignamaggio serves as background for classic art and film.

Vineyards occupy 128 acres of Villa Vignamaggio alongside 27 acres of olive groves. People come to the villa not only for the lure of the vineyard's Chianti Classico, but history. The Gheradri family, who owned the villa in the 16th Century, gave birth to their famous daughter Mona Lisa on the property. The background of her famous portrait by another local resident, Leonardo da Vinci, captures area scenery. This same location served as the backdrop for the 1992 film "Much Ado About Nothing" starring Emma Thompson and Denzel Washington. Reserve space for daily tours of the old cellars, gardens and museum. An on-site shop offers wine tastings as well as wine and oil tasting classes. Accommodations are available.
