Museums exist for the purpose of preserving and presenting artifacts, teaching an appreciation and understanding of the world around us, and displaying the dreams of visionaries. In a city as large and as diverse as Chicago, Ill., there are many different kinds of museums available to the public.

    • There isn't a science museum in the Western Hemisphere that is bigger than the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, Ill., according to its website. The museum offers exhibits, labs, demonstrations and special events in such areas as energy, technology, health, space and biology. It promotes special programs for children, for teachers and for science aficionados. Groups are welcome. While there, visit the Smart Home, an eco-friendly home exhibit, and discover ways you can make your own home efficient and green. Stop by Science Storms to learn more about the natural forces of nature. This museum is open all year long with the exception of Christmas Day.

    Chicago Children's Museum

    • Chicago Children's Museum puts science into context for the younger set. The hands-on exhibits are designed to trigger a sense of wonder and spark the imagination. The Play It Safe exhibit is all about fires, firemen, fire equipment and fire safety. Don't miss the Dinosaur Expedition where the children get to dig up bones. WaterWays will teach children how water is harnessed for use. The museum hosts a variety of programs such as Homemade Music where you make your own instrument, and Petite Chefs, a cooking and tasting experience. All ages are welcome.

    Chicago History Museum

    • Chicago has a rich history, and this legacy, along with many others are chronicled through exhibits at the Chicago History Museum. Discover the wedding traditions of different cultures and religions in I Do! Chicago Ties the Knot. Learn about Abraham Lincoln in the Lincoln at 200 exhibit. Visit the Dioramas that display the history and growth of Chicago through the years. The Treasures exhibit is a collection of artifacts such as Abraham Lincoln's deathbed or items from the world's fairs that have been held in Chicago. The museum offers an on-site eatery, the North & Clark Café.

    Museum of Contemporary Art

    • Located in downtown Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art presents varied mediums of art including photography, performance, sculpture and painting. Visit the sculpture garden or attend a lecture in the theater. Family Day involves participation in activities suitable for parents and children through 12 years of age. Summer Outdoor Creation Stations provide for the examination of an exhibit followed by the creation of a personal piece of art. Various workshops are held throughout the year. An on-site restaurant, Puck's, offers cuisine created by Wolfgang Puck.
