Houston's Museum of Fine Arts has more than 56,000 works ranging from antiquities to modern day art. Admission is free for everyone on Thursdays, and the museum also offers a program called Free First Sunday. On the first Sunday of every month the museum holds workshops and demonstrations, hosts films and performances, and offers other family activities free of charge.

The Miller Outdoor Theatre bills itself as "Houston's premier outdoor theater for the performing arts." According to its website, the theatre hosts musical theater, jazz, classical music performances, ballet, and Shakespeare. It also screens classic films. The theatre has a covered seating area and offers a picnic area, too.
Miller Outdoor Theatre has a BYOB policy, which means guests can bring their own drinks and food to performances, though glass containers and bottles are not allowed. Free performances are staged March through October.

The Houston Public Library has multiple branches throughout the city. The library hosts many family-friendly events at no cost to the participants. Different events include readings by famous authors, weekly enrichment programs, and live music. The library even hosts a Wii gaming event for adults over the lunch hour.
