Why did Cambodia speak French?

Cambodia's official language is Khmer, not French. While Cambodia was under French rule from the late 19th century to the middle of the 20th century, French did become an important language in Cambodia, especially among the elite and educated classes. However, after Cambodia gained its independence in 1953, Khmer was established as the country's sole official language.
