Sea Sickness Help

Seasickness is also called motion sickness. It happens when a person's brain gets mixed messages about motion and the body's position in space. The symptoms of seasickness include dizziness, sweating, general discomfort, nausea and vomiting. However, there are things a person can do to help ease the symptoms.
  1. Cabin Location

    • When traveling on a large cruise ship, avoid seasickness by requesting a cabin in the middle of the ship near the waterline. Once on board, it helps to go to upper decks outside and focus on the horizon or some stationary object in the distance.

    Seasickness Triggers

    • A person who has trouble with seasickness should avoid smoking or smokers and drinking large amounts of alcohol the evening before traveling.

    Proper Diet

    • To prevent seasickness, it is best to avoid heavy, greasy or acidic foods like coffee, orange or grapefruit juice, bacon, sausage or pancakes. These foods are slow to digest. Better food choices include breads, cereals, grains, milk, water, apple juice or bananas.

    Over-the-Counter Medications

    • There are over-the-counter antihistamine medicines that can help treat and prevent seasickness. These medicines have brand names such as Antivert, Bonine, Dramamine and Benadryl. The negative side effect is that they can cause drowsiness.

    Prescription Medicines

    • A doctor can prescribe medicines to prevent or treat seasickness. Some of the choices are the drug Phenergan or the skin patch Transderm Scop that is worn for up to three days.
