Jet Lag Remedies

Exhaustion, fatigue, and feeling tired and run down are symptoms of jet lag, which often occurs after long flights when the traveler crosses into a different time zone. Simply giving your body time to adjust to a new time zone will cure jet lag, but if you don't want to spend your first day of vacation feeling exhausted and cranky, there are ways to mitigate the effects of jet lag that you can follow during your flight and after you land.
  1. Sleeping Aids

    • Jet lag will go away on its own, but if you may need help sleeping after arriving at your destination, talk to your doctor about sleep aids. If it is nighttime at your destination when you arrive and you had trouble sleeping on the plane, use sleep aids to help you fall asleep in accordance with your new time zone. You can also use sleep aids when you arrive at your destination if you are still having trouble falling asleep on the correct schedule.

    Light Therapy

    • If you are still having trouble staying awake on the correct time schedule, spending time in sunlight may be helpful. Light box therapy will do so as well. Placing the light box by your bed helps illuminate your body and acts like sunlight to make your body realize it should be awake. Light of any sort stops the production of melatonin, which is what makes your body sleepy.

    Caffeine

    • If all else fails, use the stay-awake method that works even when your body is already adjusted to a time zone -- caffeine. Just be sure to not drink so much that you keep yourself awake at night.
