Signs of Jet Lag

Jet lag, also known as desynchronosis, is a result of traveling across time zones and causes issues such as fatigue and insomnia. The hypothalamus portion of the brain gives the body a sense of time and regulates body temperature, blood pressure and hormones. Therefore, when traveling through time zones, your body is physically preparing for bed time, when it is only morning. Jet lag can throw off many bodily functions. Watch for the signs that indicate jet lag.
  1. Sleep Problems

    • After crossing many time zones, jet lag can cause sleep problems. These include insomnia, general tiredness and drowsiness during the day. This is due to your circadian rhythm being thrown off by thinking night is day and day is night.

    Memory Loss and Confusion

    • Due to lack of sleep and throwing your body off its circadian rhythm, sufferers of jet lag could show signs of memory loss and confusion. Other signs involving the brain include trouble concentrating and difficulty making decisions.

    Appetite Changes

    • Due to the fact that the timing of eating does not match up in different time zones, you may show signs of decreased or increased appetite.

    Urinary and Bowel Changes

    • Jet lag may cause changes in bowel movements, which includes diarrhea or constipation. Urinary problems are also a sign of jet lag.

    Other Signs

    • Other commons signs indicating jet lag include headaches and sinus irritation. Depression may also be a long-term sign of jet lag caused by sleep issues.
